Yoga – wow!

I have tried all sorts of relaxation approaches – meditation, reiki, tai chi, qi gong. But I have never tried yoga. Well, I am on holiday at the moment. We are in the middle of an activity week. We are learning to sail – something I am not finding easy. Capsizing seems to be the bit which I find particularly easy.

Each morning we have a class of yoga, which is amazing. We are learning Ashtanga Yoga – it is one of the most strenuous hours I have spent. I am gaining remarkable levels of fitness really quickly.

I intend to continue with yoga after the holiday.

Happy New Year … at last

Happy New Year … at last

In spite of all the promises I stayed away from the computer for the whole of the festive season. There are times when it is important to have a break from the gadgets!

Three things preoccupied me over the festive season:

Music – I listened to a fantastic range of music. I now have two albums by Doves which are regularly on my CD player, especially in the car. The latest album ‘Some Cities’ is great, but I am also enjoying listening to ‘The Last Broadcast’ which is heavily influenced by King Crimson.

But the album which has really gripped me over the last couple of days is the latest album by Robert Fripp. Called ‘Love Cannot Bear: Soundscapes – Live in the USA’ it has taken me a few weeks to get hold of this one. I was pleasantly surprise to find that it was on sale in a local record shop (I thought it was internet sale only!). I love Fripp’s soundscape albums. My favourite is ‘A Blessing of Tears’ which I often play when I want a deeper level of concentration for some prolonged writing. This new album is stunningly serene. It draws out elongated emotional expressions, almost symphonic in its deliberations. If you have the chance to get hold of this CD, do so. If you want to hear some extracts you can go to Fripp’s latest site here.

Books – I’m in the middle of reading Robin Sharma’s ‘The monk who sold his Ferrari’. It is a really good read – lots of self development ideas. I recognise a few of them from writers like Tony Robbins, but the book has a real inspirational air to it. I like the Dan Millman style of story telling which is used. I recently subscribed to the Sharma podcast which is well worth a listen too.

Reiki – I am consolidating Reiki 2 and have begun to think about doing Reiki Masters. I will make decisions about this in the next couple of days. In the meantime, I am working with the energy and working through a few issues towards the right place to decide. If anyone finds their way to this writing through serendipity and has a useful comment or advice feel free to post something. I welcome your views as I move to the next stage in a spiritual journey.

What’s he building in there?

What’s he building in there?

Apologies for the prolonged break in transmission. There is an immutable law in this process which says that the longer you leave it before posting, the harder it is to get back to. This is because the expectation I place on myself that the return post should be fantastic increases the pressure. So the gap grows and the expectation rises.

Sometimes the best thing to do is to just get on with it. So here I am. What have I been building? Well, I have been putting a lot of time and effort into the world of work, the world of music, and the world of Buddhism and Reiki. Although the last pair in that list would benefit from a lot more focus than I have given of late.

I have been writing up entries in the other journal I keep – the one with a rubber band round it, which I carry most places with me, and which I keep private thoughts in. This is where I play and test out ideas. Some of them find their way onto this blog. Some don’t.

Well, the posting resumes – I am a few days away from a break, and with it will come an increase in posts to the blog…

The title of this post – “What’s he building in there?” – follow the link for the song it comes from.

Characters in Reiki

A few months ago I took my Reiki Second Degree, and have been working with the skills since. Over the months since I did the First Degree (nearly a year ago now), I have encountered a growing number of characters during reiki treatments. Some of these will be guides and characters from the past. It’s strange to come across these characters.

Sometimes they are just a feeling of presence within the room – at other times they are a vivid person who I can actually see. Often they come to me with a message or suggestion.

I enjoy receiving these intuitions, and look forward to receiving more. I am contemplating moving forwards to reiki master some point soon. We shall see.

It is part of the inner working, trying to understand the meaning beneath everything. The biggest journey we take in our lives is the journey within…

Listening and reading… Reiki Two

I’m listening to some pretty mainstream stuff at the moment:

REM – Around the Sun

Keane – Hopes and Fears

Both are in the charts – and both are albums that I’m enjoying listening to at the moment. I’m also delving into a group of greatest hits albums by The Eagles, Queen and Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. Great fun. My three sons leap around the kitchen when we play Queen. And Steve Harley goes down quite well too!

Over the weekend I did my Reiki Two, which was a mind-blowing experience. For the car journey to and from I chose Sheila Chandra’s ABoneCroneDrone which is a fantastic album of ambience, drones and chill-out sounds. It was absolutely the right music for the weekend’s experiences.

Books:

Recently finished reading:

Michael Heppell – How to be Brilliant

John Kao – Jamming: the art and discipline of business creativity

and I am in the middle of:

Fiona Harrold - The 10-minute life coach

Reiki and Chakras

I learnt the first degree of reiki about a month ago, and since then have been working on the self-healing phase of things. It’s amazing. I’m going through all sorts of experiences, feelings and emotions. Each step takes me further on, as I gain deeper understanding of working on an intuitive level.

Intuitive ideas and thoughts are blipping into my mind in a way that surprises me. I wonder whether these thoughts were there before, but went unacknowledged, or whether there are thoughts in my mind that I wouldn’t have had before.

The whole idea of chakra working is fascinating. I’m reading a book about all of this at the moment, called ‘Wheels of Life’ by Anodea Judith. I’ve just started to dip into this book – it looks really fascinating. It draws quite heavily on the work of Caroline Myss. I read her book ‘Anatomy of the Spirit’ a couple of years ago, and particularly like the way she links together chakras with qabbalah ideas, christian ideas and hindu approaches. Joining up systems is a great way to encourage harmony in the world, rather than division.

BACK SOON!

After a couple of months of frozen creativity, I am back. I have been struggling with writing three journals – this online one, a learning journal I keep for work, and a personal journal which fits in my pocket. I’m trying to think through ways of integrating these – so that the learning and imaginative thoughts can go hand in hand with the material I generate for this journal. Just needs a little more thought. In the meantime, I’m back to writing in here at least a couple of times a week.

What music have I been listening to whilst I’ve been away? Even that was a bit out on the edge – I’ve been listening to lots of obscure ambient and noise music, with a share of found sounds too. Then I have also been listening to plenty of Radiohead and the last few albums by jazz saxophonist Charles Lloyd.

My interest in Buddhism continues…and I am thinking of doing First Degree Reiki.

Oh, and my PhD thesis was submitted a couple of weeks ago – time to wait for the viva now…

Books – finished reading John O’Farrell’s “The Best a Man can get” which was both hysterically funny, and painfully uncomfortable. A great read.

Well, it just took a few minutes and I’m back on line. I wish the redesign of the website was as straightforward. Can someone explain to me where I will find a free idiot’s guide to Frontpage so that I don’t keep pressing the wrong buttons and ending up with completely dysfunctional web pages? Please email me if you can help.
