Drink I

Ah, the toast we share when we clink our glasses, happy that we have achieved something of which we are proud. We want to share that with those around us, so we raise our glasses and drink to the success.

That’s what it’s like each time I fill a glass with a good wine. That memory, that yearning for celebration. Wanting to hear my very own soundtrack playing in the background as I realise that all the hard work has led to something that is significant.

It’s not like that of course. Yes, we do make our own luck. There is no significant gain that comes from standing on the sidelines. And there is hardly ever such a thing as an overnight success. Overnight takes years!

When things drop for us, when the jackpot in our very own version of a gamble, comes through, it’s never when we expect it. We drink to it nonetheless as if it were a reward for all the hard work.

Drink II

There’s nothing like a glass of cold water when we have been walking all day and we are exhausted and have had nothing to drink for hours. That sense of it trickling down into our stomach, a real feeling as it goes down.

The end of the race, the end of the pursuit, and now the drink, the guzzling beauty of it.
The quenching of a thirst. The sense of relief. The mundane become special.

Drink III

A thirst for learning – the wonder that there is so much to discover in the world around us. We need to take every opportunity to drink from the fountain of knowledge and enjoy that which we have just learnt for the first time. Curiosity sated by the drinking of new ideas, new knowledge, new concepts, new places, new people.

Drink IV

Making sense of it all through the whisky glass, the beer glass, the wine glass. Drinking to forget. Drinking to create a haze. Drinking because.
